Best Free Online German Mock Exam Sites (2026): Goethe, telc & Digital TestDaF Simulator Comparison
Last updated: 17 October 2026 · Verified against official exam guidelines and grading rubrics
Taking a realistic free online mock exam (Modelltest / Übungstest) is the fastest way to diagnose your readiness before paying an exam registration fee. However, most 'free German placement tests' online are just 20-question grammar quizzes that look nothing like an official Goethe, telc, or Digital TestDaF exam.
Comparison of Free Online German Mock Exam Resources
| Platform / Resource | Exams Covered | Answer Explanations & Grading | Interactive Interface |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zertifly (/free) | Goethe A1–B2, telc A1–B2, Digital TestDaF | Instant score + per-option evidence explanations in 6 languages | Full digital exam simulator with timers and audio player |
| Goethe-Institut Official Modellsatz | Goethe A1–C2 | Raw answer key only; no explanations | Mostly PDF + static sample views |
| telc Official Übungstest | telc A1–C1 | Answer key letters at the end of the PDF | Downloadable PDF + separate MP3 files |
| TestDaF Official Sample Tasks | Digital TestDaF | Sample solutions without automated TDN grading | Limited static web preview |
| Generic Language School Quizzes | General CEFR grammar | Total score only | 20–30 multiple-choice grammar sentences |
Placement Quiz vs. True Exam Simulation: Why Format Matters
Scoring 85% on a generic B2 grammar quiz does not mean you can pass telc B2 Sprachbausteine under time pressure or complete 7 Digital TestDaF speaking tasks with a 45-second preparation timer.
On Zertifly's free practice hub (/free), you select your exact exam and level—such as `/free/testdaf/c1`, `/free/telc/b2`, `/free/telc/b1`, `/free/goethe/a2`, or `/free/goethe/a1`—and experience the authentic Teil structure right in your browser.
How to Use a Free Mock Exam to Plan Your Prep
- Step 1: Complete a full module on Zertifly (/free) with the timer running and no dictionary.
- Step 2: Review the detailed explanation and text evidence for every question you missed or guessed.
- Step 3: Focus your next 2–4 weeks of study on the specific Teil or skill (e.g., Listening or Writing) where you lost the most points.
