Goethe A1 from Zero: A 12-Week Study Plan
Last updated: July 2026 · 9 min read
Preparing for Goethe A1 with zero German doesn't require magic — it requires a regular, correctly sequenced programme. This plan gets you exam-ready in 12 weeks at 30–45 minutes a day. If you are preparing for the family reunification visa, aim to sit the exam in weeks 10–12 of the plan — see our dates and booking guide.
Weeks 1–4: Foundations
- Week 1: Alphabet and pronunciation, numbers (0–100), greetings and farewells. Practise spelling your own name and city (buchstabieren) from week one — the oral exam asks exactly this.
- Week 2: Introducing yourself: Name, Alter, Land, Wohnort, Beruf, Hobby. The verbs "sein" and "haben", basic sentence structure.
- Week 3: Family and home: kinship words, household items, possession (mein/dein). Regular verb conjugation.
- Week 4: Time, days, months, dates. Appointment dialogues — every A1 module contains a time or date question.
Weeks 5–8: Everyday Topics
- Week 5: Shopping and food: asking prices, supermarket dialogues, quantities.
- Week 6: Directions, transport, places in the city. Announcement language (train, bus, airport) — the core material of Hören Teil 2.
- Week 7: Health and body, making appointments, apology/request patterns (Können Sie…? / Kann ich…?).
- Week 8: Work and daily routine: separable verbs (aufstehen, einkaufen), describing your weekly schedule.
From this stage on, add 2–3 listening sets per week. You'll find real-format audio sets in Zertifly Hören A1 — listening is the slowest skill to develop at A1 and the one to start earliest.
Weeks 9–12: Exam Format and Rehearsal
- Week 9: Learn the task types of all four modules — our sample questions guide was written for exactly this. Solve one set per module.
- Week 10: Automate Schreiben: write the form task plus the 30-word e-mail template (greeting, 3 points, closing) at least 5 times. Get your texts scored by AI in Zertifly Schreiben A1.
- Week 11: Speaking rehearsal: make your self-introduction fluent; practise question cards and request patterns out loud. Run the full oral exam at least 3 times in the speaking simulation.
- Week 12: Full dress rehearsal: a complete exam in one sitting (Hören + Lesen + Schreiben, then a Sprechen run). After error analysis, 2–3 extra sets for your weakest module.
The Practice Half of the Plan: Zertifly
Everything this plan needs from week 5 onwards is ready on Zertifly: Goethe A1–format listening sets, reading tasks, AI-scored writing exercises and a speaking simulation with the real exam flow. Progress with 30 minutes a day — no course schedule required.
Suggested Daily Routine
- 10 min: vocabulary review (including previous days).
- 15 min: the week's topic (grammar + new words).
- 10 min: a listening or reading exercise.
- 5–10 min: speaking out loud: build 3–5 sentences with what you learned.
Conclusion
The 12 weeks split into three equal blocks: foundations, everyday topics, and exam format. The plan's most important rule: reserve the last four weeks for exam format. Of two candidates at the same level, the one who knows the format always scores clearly higher. For the visa side of the process, read our family reunification guide.
