Goethe A1 results are usually released a few weeks after the exam (timing varies by center), and most centers announce results online. Below is what you need to know about scoring, grade bands, and the certificate.

Scoring and the Pass Mark

The exam is graded out of 100 points; the scores of the four modules (Hören, Lesen, Schreiben, Sprechen) are added up. You need at least 60 points to pass. A weak module can be offset by points gathered in the others.

Grade Bands

The Goethe grade descriptors are based on approximately these bands:

  • sehr gut (very good): ~100–90 points
  • gut (good): ~89–80 points
  • befriedigend (satisfactory): ~79–70 points
  • ausreichend (sufficient): ~69–60 points
  • nicht bestanden (failed): below 60 points

Certificate and Validity

Goethe certificates have no official expiry date. However, applications may require different periods: for example, in the family reunification visa process the language proof is expected to be no more than 1 year old; some institutions accept a 2-year-old certificate. Verify current requirements with the relevant authority.

What If You Don't Pass?

Because A1 is not modular, if you don't pass you usually retake the whole exam (there is no single-module retake at A1). Identifying your weak modules and studying them in a targeted way is the most efficient path for a retake.
