Scoring and the Pass Mark

The exam is graded out of 100 points; the scores of the four modules (Hören, Lesen, Schreiben, Sprechen) are added up. You need at least 60 points to pass. A weak module can be offset by points gathered in the others.

Grade Bands

The Goethe grade descriptors are based on approximately these bands:

sehr gut (very good): ~100–90 points
gut (good): ~89–80 points
befriedigend (satisfactory): ~79–70 points
ausreichend (sufficient): ~69–60 points
nicht bestanden (failed): below 60 points

Certificate and Validity

Goethe certificates have no official expiry date. However, applications may require different periods: for example, in the family reunification visa process the language proof is expected to be no more than 1 year old; some institutions accept a 2-year-old certificate.
