Goethe A2 Lesen (Reading): The 4 Parts and Question Types

Lesen (reading) is one of the written modules of Goethe A2. It lasts about 30 minutes, has four parts, and a total of 20 items (20 points). You read authentic everyday texts and show your understanding through questions. In the written group (Lesen + Hören + Schreiben), A2 is confirmed with at least 45 of 75 points.

Teil 1: Newspaper/Magazine Text

You read a short Zeitungsartikel (newspaper text) and answer 5 multiple-choice questions (a/b/c). The questions follow the order of the text; reading the questions first and then locating the relevant spot saves time.

Teil 2: Information Board / Notices

You read an information board or short notices/ads and answer 5 multiple-choice questions. The target here is usually a concrete detail such as a number, time, floor, or direction; scan for the target instead of reading everything.

Teil 3: Personal Email

You read a personal E-Mail from a friend and answer 5 multiple-choice questions. Track who, when, where, and why; at A2 the sentences are short and concrete.

Teil 4: Internet Ads (Matching)

You get six internet ads (a–f) and five people with a request; you match each person to the right ad. One ad fits no one, and you write "X" for it. Identify each person's key condition (price, day, topic) and look for it in the ads.

Preparation Tips

1. Read the question first, then the text; find the "evidence sentence" for each question.
2. Practise scanning and skimming as separate skills.
3. Strengthen your vocabulary — see our A2 word list guide.
4. Split the time: aim for about 7 minutes per part and remember to transfer answers to the sheet.

Conclusion

With the right reading technique and solid vocabulary, Lesen is one of the modules where you can score most reliably. Knowing the question type of each of the four parts lets you use your time efficiently in the exam.
