Sprechen (speaking) is the oral part of Goethe A2. It lasts about 15 minutes and is usually taken by two candidates together, with two examiners listening. Speaking accounts for 25 points of the 100-point total and consists of three parts. Below we explain each part with German examples.

Teil 1: Asking and Answering Questions

You are given a topic (e.g. Essen und Trinken, Freizeit) and cards with keywords on it. Using these words, you ask your partner questions and answer theirs.

  • Card: Frühstück → "Was isst du zum Frühstück?"
  • Card: Hobby → "Welche Hobbys hast du?"

Focus on forming short, correct questions; full sentences are not required, but the verb must be right.

Teil 2: Talking About Yourself

You receive a topic card (e.g. Mein Tag, Mein Wochenende) and talk about yourself based on guiding points. The examiners may ask short follow-up questions.

Useful phrases: "Normalerweise stehe ich um ... auf.", "Am Wochenende treffe ich meine Freunde.", "In meiner Freizeit ..."

Teil 3: Planning Something Together

With your partner, you plan an everyday situation together — for example arranging a joint appointment or activity. You are expected to make suggestions and reach agreement.

Useful phrases: "Wollen wir am Samstag ...?", "Passt dir 15 Uhr?", "Ich schlage vor, wir treffen uns ...", "Gut, einverstanden!"

How Is It Assessed?

Examiners assess task fulfilment (did you manage to ask the question, agree on the plan), pronunciation and intelligibility, and use of vocabulary and grammar. At A2, clear, purpose-appropriate communication matters more than fluency.

Preparation Tips

  1. Memorise ready-made phrases (Redemittel) for each part and repeat them out loud.
  2. Rehearse the paired format in real time with a partner or an audio recording.
  3. Drill question patterns (W-questions: Was, Wann, Wie oft ...) until they are automatic.
  4. Record yourself and listen back to check your pronunciation and clarity.
