Retaking a Failed Goethe B1 Module and Using Module Certificates

Last updated: 27 August 2026 · Verified against official sources

Goethe B1 is modular. Failing Reading, Listening, Writing or Speaking does not require you to repeat modules you have already passed.

What do you retake?

You may register for the module you need to pass or improve. A later sitting does not automatically invalidate modules already passed.

Dates and fees are set by the centre, so confirm them before booking.

How certificates work

Goethe states that four separate module certificates are equivalent to the all-round certificate. A single certificate may be available when all modules are passed in the same session and centre.

Ask the receiving institution whether it has extra rules on certificate age or presentation.

Retake checklist

  • Identify the exact failed module.
  • Practise only with the official format under time.
  • Confirm the date, fee and certificate process with the centre.
  • Keep every passed module certificate.
