telc does not offer only one exam at B1. For working life there is telc Deutsch B1·B2 Beruf, and for nursing there is telc Deutsch B1·B2 Pflege. The defining feature of both is that they are dual-level exams: every part contains tasks at both B1 and B2, and your certificate is issued at either B1 or B2 depending on how you perform.

What dual-level means

The general telc Deutsch B1 has one threshold: you pass or you do not. A dual-level exam contains tasks at two CEFR levels throughout, and issues you a certificate at the lower or the higher level. So you can aim at B2 and walk away with a B1 certificate — the attempt is not wasted.

One other important restriction: neither exam can be taken as a partial examination. You sit the written and oral parts together.

telc Deutsch B1·B2 Beruf

This focuses on professions, everyday working life and the tasks people carry out at work. The structure:

Schreiben245 min
Written total129 min
Sprechen3~16 min (+20 min preparation)

Two visible differences from the general telc B1: writing consists of two tasks (the general B1 has a single email) and reading has four parts (the general B1 has three). The oral exam is usually taken with two candidates.

telc Deutsch B1·B2 Pflege

This is designed for people who will work in nursing and care; the content and nature of the texts reflect the everyday working life of nurses.

The writing task is this exam's signature: not a free letter but a report of the kind nursing professionals actually write at work. The oral exam has three tasks: talking about your experiences and opinions on a topic, discussing a controversial topic, and giving a short presentation.

The Pflege exam is offered as a digital, hybrid and paper-based examination.

Which one should you take?

  • Citizenship or a general B1 certificate → the general telc Deutsch B1. The professional exams are not automatic substitutes; go by what the authority or employer actually asks for.
  • Working in nursing or care in GermanyB1·B2 Pflege. Recognition procedures usually expect a B2-level certificate, and this exam lets you aim for B2 in one sitting.
  • A workplace German certificateB1·B2 Beruf.

One important caveat: which certificate is accepted is decided by the relevant authority or employer, always. The level required for professional recognition (Anerkennung) can vary by federal state and by profession — get written confirmation before you register.

Build the foundation with the general B1 format

The professional exams use the same item types. The reading and Sprachbausteine exercises on Zertifly drill exactly the structures that also appear in Beruf and Pflege.

Conclusion

The professional telc exams are not "a harder B1" — they are a different exam: dual-level, domain-specific, and not available as a partial exam. The right choice depends far less on your German than on who is going to ask for the certificate.
