Answer key – Part 1

ItemAnswerWhy
21c) dennAfter denn the clause keeps verb-second order (hatte in position 2); weil and obwohl would send the verb to the end.
22b) habenhelfen forms the Perfekt with haben; the subject meine Brüder is plural.
23a) desin der Nähe takes the genitive: der Bahnhof → des Bahnhofs.
24c) großenMasculine accusative after einen: einen großen Balkon.
25b) diekennenlernen needs an accusative object; plural Nachbarn → die.
26a) sichsich beschweren is reflexive; third person → sich.
27c) sodassA result clause with the verb at the end (kann); deshalb would need inversion: deshalb kann ich …
28a) schnellerA comparison with als needs the comparative: schneller.
29b) zuLust haben is followed by zu + infinitive; um … zu expresses a purpose.
30c) wennsich freuen, wenn … introduces a condition; ob is only for indirect yes/no questions.

Answer key – Part 2

ItemAnswerWhy
31i) FÜRsich interessieren für + accusative.
32m) VONA time span is von … bis.
33f) DASSdass reports what the advert says.
34n) WANNAn indirect question about the start time; the sentence ends with a question mark.
35l) VIELWie viel kostet …? asks about the price.
36b) AUSSERDEMAußerdem adds a further point; the verb habe follows in position 2.
37c) BISHERbisher means ‘so far’ and fits ‘habe … wenig Erfahrung’.
38d) DAMITdamit gives the purpose of registering early; the verb kann goes to the end.
39e) DANKBARFixed phrase: Ich wäre Ihnen dankbar, wenn …
40o) WÜRDEPolite Konjunktiv II: Über … würde ich mich freuen.

Why the five leftover words don’t fit

  • AN – sich interessieren takes für, not an (an only goes with the adjective interessiert).
  • DENN – denn needs verb-second order (denn ich kann …), so it cannot replace damit in gap 38.
  • FROH – froh does not take a dative object: Ich wäre froh is fine, Ich wäre Ihnen froh is not.
  • MEHR – neither ‘wie mehr’ nor ‘mehr wenig Erfahrung’ is correct German.
  • SEIT – a span from … to is von … bis; seit marks a starting point in the past.

Score yourself

Correct answersPointsWhat it means
2030Full marks for Sprachbausteine
1624Strong – review the two types of mistakes you made
1218Borderline – drill cases, word order and fixed phrases
812Weak – revise the grammar list in the related guide first

Sprachbausteine has no pass mark of its own; its points go into the written total, where you need 135 of 225.

Tactics that save time

  • Read the whole text once before choosing: who writes to whom, du or Sie?
  • In Part 1, check the verb position after the gap: a verb at the end means a subordinating conjunction (weil, dass, sodass, wenn).
  • Look before and after the gap: a preposition fixes the case, a noun fixes the article and adjective ending.
  • In Part 2, place the certain words first and cross them off; the remaining choices get easier.
  • Never leave a gap empty – only marks on the answer sheet count, and a blank gap cannot score.
