telc B1 Reading Part 3: Matching Ads and the x Answer
Last updated: 13 October 2026 · Verified against the official telc mock exam
telc Deutsch B1 Reading part 3 tests selective reading: for ten situations numbered 11–20 you find the right ad among twelve ads labelled a–l. Each ad can be used only once, and some situations have no matching ad; then you mark x. In the official Übungstest 1, more than one situation has x as the correct answer.
How the task works
- Each situation describes someone's concrete need: what, when, for whom and on what condition.
- The ads are short texts: restaurants, courses, travel, flats, events and so on.
- An ad that fits the topic but fails one condition (day, age, price, place) is not the answer.
A fast scanning method
- Mark two conditions in each situation: the topic and the restriction (e.g. 'Kinder 6 und 9', 'Samstagnachmittag').
- Scan the ads for those conditions instead of reading every ad in full.
- Cross out each ad once you have used it; with fewer ads left, decisions get easier.
- If no ad meets both conditions, mark x with confidence.
Original example (not official)
Situation A: „Sie möchten am Samstagnachmittag mit Ihren Kindern (6 und 9 Jahre) ins Kino.“ · Situation B: „Sie suchen für Sonntagvormittag einen Babysitter.“ – Anzeigen: a) Filmclub Lumière: Klassiker im Original, samstags 21 Uhr, ab 18 Jahren · b) Kinderkino im Bürgerhaus: samstags 15 Uhr, Familienfilme für Kinder ab 6 · c) Open-Air-Kino am See: Juli und August, Beginn bei Dunkelheit
For situation A the answer is b: Saturday afternoon and suitable for children aged 6 and over. Option a fails on age limit and time, c on dates. For situation B no ad offers a babysitter, so the answer is x.
