telc B1 Speaking Assessment Criteria and the 75 Points
Last updated: August 2026 · 8 min read
The telc B1 oral examination is worth 75 points. Each of its three parts is assessed through Ausdrucksfähigkeit, Aufgabenbewältigung, Formale Richtigkeit and Aussprache/Intonation.
What do the four criteria measure?
| Criterion | What is assessed |
|---|---|
| Ausdrucksfähigkeit | Role-appropriate expression, vocabulary and achieving the speaking intention |
| Aufgabenbewältigung | Participation, communication strategies and fluency |
| Formale Richtigkeit | Syntax and morphology |
| Aussprache und Intonation | How pronunciation and intonation affect understanding |
Why 15 points for Part 1 and 30 for the others?
In Part 1, the first three criteria carry up to four points each and pronunciation carries three: 15 in total. In Parts 2 and 3 those values double to 8 + 8 + 8 + 6 = 30.
The exchange about a topic and the joint planning task therefore carry 60 points together. Interactive practice matters more than polishing a memorised introduction.
What A, B, C and D mean
A is fully appropriate, B broadly appropriate, C barely acceptable and D consistently insufficient. For accuracy, B allows errors that do not impair understanding; for pronunciation, B may occasionally make understanding harder.
Error-free speech is not the only goal. Following your partner, asking questions, responding to proposals and paraphrasing when stuck all affect task management.
How the rating is decided
Two licensed examiners record independent ratings during the conversation. After the candidates leave, they compare them and agree on the final rating.
The expected performance is a natural dialogue. Follow-up questions and mutual support are explicitly described positively in the official mock examination.
