How to form a W-question

The basic order is question word + finite verb + subject + other elements: Wo wohnen Sie? Wann beginnt der Kurs? The finite verb follows the question word directly.

If a preposition belongs to the question expression, keep it with it: Um wie viel Uhr beginnt der Film? Mit wem fahren Sie? At A1, learning frequent chunks is safer than translating word by word.

Yes/no questions

Without a question word, the finite verb comes first: Haben Sie Zeit? Kommen Sie morgen? Kann ich mit Karte bezahlen? A reply need not stop at ja/nein; add one short detail to complete the exchange.
