Digital Goethe A1 Exam: How the Computer-based Test Works

The digital Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Start Deutsch 1 is normally an on-site exam, not a home internet test. Reading, Listening and Writing are completed on a test-centre laptop with a German keyboard; Speaking remains face to face with examiners.

Digital does not automatically mean remote.
What happens on screen?
- Reading and Listening answers go directly into the platform; Listening uses headphones.
- Writing is typed with a German keyboard.
- Answers can be edited until submission or time expiry.
- Time, progress, font size and headphone volume are available on screen.
- No separate answer-sheet transfer is needed.
Prepare for the keyboard
Practise the QWERTZ layout, especially Y/Z and ä, ö, ü and ß. Use Goethe's official A1 tutorial to learn the interface, but keep language practice separate.
Speaking
Speaking is conducted in person with examiners and paper material. Do not confuse this with recorded speaking in digital TestDaF.
Before booking
- Confirm that your centre offers digital A1.
- Check identity, venue and arrival instructions.
- Practise briefly with a German keyboard and headphones.
- If an online option is advertised, read its separate technical and booking rules.
