Digital TestDaF Format: The Complete Four-Section Workflow

Digital TestDaF is not an at-home exam. It is delivered on a computer at an authorised test centre in this order: Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking. Candidates type written responses and record spoken responses through a headset and microphone.
Order and core format

The seven Reading task types
- Complete a gap text: 5 items.
- Order text sections: 4 items.
- Multiple choice: 7 items.
- Match communicative functions: 4 items.
- Assign statements to categories: 7 items.
- Assign statements to a pair of concepts: 4 items.
- Identify errors in a summary: 3 items.
Tasks follow a fixed order. Once a task is completed, you cannot return to it.
The seven Listening task types
- Complete an overview with short answers: 5 items.
- Note passages for concept pairs: 4 items.
- Identify errors in a summary: 2 items.
- Match statements to speakers: 6 items.
- Complete lecture-outline points with short answers: 4 items.
- Multiple choice: 5 items.
- Compare spoken and written wording: 4 items.
Listening is not entirely automatic multiple choice. Short answers in three tasks are reviewed by trained raters.
Writing and Speaking

Why can extra trial tasks appear?
TestDaF can include additional tasks being trialled for future use. They do not count toward the result, and candidates are not told which task is unscored. Treat every task as scored.
The official page says task numbers and timing can vary in parts of the test, while all candidates receive a test of equal length.
Preparing for the interface
- Use official tutorials to practise the timer, moving forward and the no-return rule.
- Practise German keyboard characters and editing for Writing.
- Listening short answers require understandable spelling as well as comprehension.
- Use the official preparation and speaking times in recorded practice.
- A headset and microphone check is carried out at the test centre before the exam.
