DTZ Listening & Reading Practice: Hören and Lesen with Answers

Level:A2–B1Duration:100 min + ~16 minFee:Covered by BAMF in the courseValidity:UnlimitedFormat:Written + Oral (pairs)

Last updated: 20 October 2026 · Checked against BAMF, g.a.s.t. and the legal texts

This mini practice set mirrors every part of DTZ Hören and Lesen: a voicemail and a station announcement, radio reports, a conversation, a radio vox-pop, a directory, short ads, a notice, product information and a letter. With 22 items it is shorter than the real exam (20 + 25 items). The page has no audio, so the transcripts are printed – ideally someone reads them aloud to you once. Answers with explanations, tactics and the scoring follow at the end.

The real exam has 20 listening and 25 reading items; this mini set has 9 + 13 = 22. Reading items start at 21, as on the real answer sheet. All texts and items are original Zertifly practice material in the DTZ format, not official exam tasks.

How to simulate the test without audio

  • Ask someone to read each transcript aloud to you once at normal speed, without repeating it. In the exam every text is heard only once.
  • Before each text, read the items for that part. In part 4 read sentences a–e first; in the exam you get one minute for sentences a–f.
  • Do not look at the transcripts until you have answered items 1–9. Practising alone? Read each text aloud once at speaking pace, then cover it.
  • For Lesen, set a timer: the exam gives 45 minutes for 25 items, so about 23 minutes for these 13 items matches exam pace.
  • Write your answers on a separate sheet, like the answer sheet. In the exam only the answer sheet counts; use a blue or black ballpoint pen.

Check your answers only at the end. Every item has exactly one correct answer that can be justified from the text.

Transcripts for items 1–9

For the person reading aloud: read each text once at normal speed, then pause briefly so the learner can answer.

Herr Brandt: Klar, was gibt's?

Read these texts only after answering items 1–9 – otherwise the exercise is no longer listening practice.

Lesen part 1: items 21–23

Lesen part 1 (items 21–23): Read the situations and the directory of the medical centre (Ärztehaus) below. Where do you go? Choose a, b or c – c means “andere Etage” (another floor).

Answer key with explanations

ItemAnswerWhy
1cThe consent form (Einverständniserklärung) is still missing: Mr Demir has to sign it and hand it in by Friday. Emir needs no sleeping bag, and pick-up is at the usual time, 16:00.
2bNo trains run between the main station and Bergstadt; the replacement buses leave in front of the main entrance. Platform 3 is for the train to Talheim, and tickets are valid on the buses.
3bIn the afternoon it rains in the whole region. The sun only shows in the morning in the north, and Sunday is the cooler day (max. 8 degrees).
4aThe report advises leaving the motorway already at Feldheim-Nord. Kirchdorf is where the jam ends, and waiting in a car park is not mentioned.
5richtigShe asks Marco to take her Saturday shift and works one of his shifts in return – that is a swap.
6aWednesday is already swapped with Aylin, so Ms Novak takes his late shift on Monday. Saturday is her own shift, which he takes over.
7dThe mother: her daughter only gets a phone at secondary school (weiterführende Schule) and does not need one before.
8aThe father: his son has a simple phone for calls and messages; a child that age does not need the internet.
9cThe grandmother is unsure about the right age but clear that parents must set rules: how long, which apps, no phone in the evening.
21bKrankengymnastik (physiotherapy) is at Physiotherapie Krämer on the 1st floor. The medical supply shop (Sanitätshaus) on the ground floor sells bandages but gives no therapy.
22cHearing aids are at Hörakustik Weller on the 4th floor. The 4th floor is neither option a nor b, so c (andere Etage) is correct.
23aPrescription tablets come from the pharmacy on the ground floor. The dentist (3rd floor) has already written the prescription.
24cAd c offers a van and two helpers for the move. Ad e only gives away boxes.
25dAd d is for children aged 3 to 5 on Sundays. Ad b only accepts children from age 5.
26xThe only computer course (ad a) is in the morning, but the colleague works during the day – no ad fits.
27falschThe water is off only from 8:00 to about 15:00, not all day.
28bThe notice says to let the water run for a few minutes. Boiling is not mentioned, and the water truck is only there during the works.
29richtigSwitched on without water, the kettle turns itself off after a few seconds.
30falschDamage caused by limescale is excluded from the guarantee.
31bHer new working hours are the reason, so the consequence word “Deshalb” fits. “Trotzdem” signals a contrast, and after “Obwohl” the verb would go to the end.
32a“sich freuen” is reflexive; with “ich” the pronoun is “mich”.
33c“das Formular” is neuter, so the accusative indefinite article is “ein”.

Left over in Hören part 4: sentences b and e (nobody talks about homework on the internet or a phone ban at school). Left over in Lesen part 2: ads a, b and e. Count your correct answers – in the exam each of the 45 items is worth one point.

Tactics for each part

  • Hören in general: every text is played only once and all pauses are on the recording. Read the item before the text and decide straight away.
  • Hören part 1: listen for what the person is asked to do – often after “bitte”. Details that are not needed (“braucht er nicht”) are typical distractors.
  • Hören part 2: the question names a time of day or a direction (Samstagnachmittag, Richtung Süden). Listen for exactly that spot.
  • Hören part 3: the first item asks about the conversation as a whole. In the detail item, plans often change (Wednesday → Monday) – wait for the final agreement.
  • Hören part 4: read the sentences first and mark the core idea. Decide by the speaker's opinion, not by single words; two sentences fit nobody.
  • Lesen part 1: check whether the category really matches before choosing the negative option. “Andere Etage” is only right once you have found the place on a floor that is not offered in a or b.
  • Lesen part 2: underline 2–3 key details per situation (age, time, weekday, service). An ad on the right topic can still fail on one detail.
  • Lesen parts 3 and 4: watch times, conditions and exceptions such as “nur”, “nicht” or “ausgeschlossen”.
  • Lesen part 5: read the whole sentence. Check the verb position after connectors, reflexive pronouns and the article's gender and case.

Scoring: what 20 and 33 points mean

Hören and Lesen give one combined part result: 45 items, one point each. 33–45 points is B1, 20–32 points A2, 0–19 points below A2.

Current rule: an overall B1 needs B1 in Sprechen plus B1 in either Hören/Lesen or Schreiben. The third part may be weaker – under today's rule even below A2.

Planned from 1 November 2026, according to a dpa report on a draft by the Federal Ministry of the Interior: the weakest part must also reach at least A2. Then 20 points in Hören/Lesen would be the floor for an overall B1 (and 7 of 20 points in Schreiben).

Hören/Lesen pointsPart resultFor an overall B1 (with Sprechen B1)
33–45B1Enough today; under the planned rule only if Schreiben reaches at least A2 (7 points).
20–32A2Enough if Schreiben reaches B1 (15–20 points) – today and under the planned rule.
0–19below A2Still possible today with Schreiben B1; no overall B1 under the planned rule.

The change is planned but had not been officially published as of 20 October 2026, and transition rules are unknown – ask your Prüfstelle or course provider. For candidates who genuinely work on every part, little changes.
