Goethe A2 Speaking Phrases: Redemittel for All 3 Parts
Last updated: 8 October 2026 · Verified against current official Goethe-Institut sources
The Goethe A2 speaking exam takes about 15 minutes with two candidates and has three parts. There is no preparation time: you get the cards during the exam. That is why you need the phrases for each part to come automatically. This page gives ready-made German phrases for all three parts, an original dialogue for finding a time and the criteria that decide the score.
Part 1: asking and answering with cards
You get four cards, each with a topic and a keyword (e.g. Fragen zur Person – Wohnort?). You ask your partner four questions from the cards, then answer their four.
| Function | German phrase |
|---|---|
| Asking | Wann hast du Geburtstag? / Wo wohnst du? / Was bist du von Beruf? / Welche Sprachen sprichst du? |
| Answering | Ich habe im Mai Geburtstag. / Ich wohne seit drei Jahren in Köln. / Ich arbeite als Krankenpfleger. |
| When you don't understand | Wie bitte? Kannst du das bitte wiederholen? / Was bedeutet … ? |
Turn the keyword straight into a question; for the card 'Wohnort?' 'Wo wohnst du?' is enough.
Part 2: talking about yourself
You get a card with a question and four prompts (e.g. Wie verbringen Sie Ihren Feierabend?). Give each prompt two or three sentences.
| Step | German phrase |
|---|---|
| Starting | Ich möchte etwas über … erzählen. |
| Describing habits | Normalerweise … / Meistens … / Manchmal … |
| Saying when | Am Wochenende … / Nach der Arbeit … / Im Urlaub … |
| Opinion and reason | Das finde ich gut, weil … / Das mache ich gern, denn … |
| Finishing | Das ist alles. / Mehr kann ich dazu nicht sagen. |
Part 3: finding a time together
You both have a busy diary. You suggest and turn down times until you find a free slot together, then agree on a place and time.
| Function | German phrase |
|---|---|
| Suggesting | Hast du am Samstag um 10 Uhr Zeit? / Wie wäre es mit Sonntag? |
| Declining with a reason | Da kann ich leider nicht, da muss ich … / Um 10 Uhr habe ich schon einen Termin. |
| Counter-suggestion | Geht es vielleicht später? / Und was ist mit 15 Uhr? |
| Agreeing | Ja, das passt mir gut. / Gute Idee! / Einverstanden. |
| Summing up | Also, dann treffen wir uns am Samstag um 15 Uhr vor dem Kaufhaus. Bis Samstag! |
Sample dialogue (original, not official)
Every refusal comes with a reason, and place and time are summed up at the end; these two steps show task completion in part 3.
Assessment criteria
- Task completion: are the language function, interaction and register right for the situation and partner?
- Range: are vocabulary and structures varied enough for A2?
- Accuracy: how far do mistakes affect understanding?
- Pronunciation: do intonation, word stress and individual sounds affect understanding?
