Goethe B1 and B2 run on the same modular logic: four modules, 100 points each and a 60-point pass mark. The difference is not in Reading and Listening — the real gap opens up in the productive modules, Writing and Speaking.

What is identical
- Both exams are modular: the four modules may be taken individually or together and each is passed separately.
- Each module is worth a maximum of 100 points and 60 points (60%) is the pass mark.
- The grading scale is the same: 100–90 sehr gut, 89–80 gut, 79–70 befriedigend, 69–60 ausreichend, 59–0 nicht bestanden.
- In Reading and Listening the 30 items are multiplied by 3.33 to give 100 points, so 18 correct equals 60 points.
- Modules may be retaken as often as the exam centre's capacity allows.
- Writing and Speaking are graded by two independent examiners.
Where the real difference lies
- Writing: B1 has three short tasks; at B2 you write two longer texts — a forum post of about 150 words and a message of about 100 words. You gain 15 minutes, but the expectation per text is far higher.
- Speaking: B1 has three parts while B2 has two; in exchange B2 asks for a free presentation of about 4 minutes followed by a joint discussion.
- Because Reading and Listening share the same timing and item counts, the difference there lies in text difficulty, not in the number of tasks.
- What B2 measures is not subject knowledge but range: varied subordinate clauses, the passive and Konjunktiv II are scored directly through the 'Strukturen' criterion.
For a candidate who has passed B1, preparation for B2 should be invested mainly in Writing and Speaking; the format of Reading and Listening is already familiar.
