For a candidate at B2 level, 8 weeks with 1.5–2 hours of regular daily study is a realistic window to prepare for TestDaF. This plan balances the four skills, sets a measurable weekly goal and reserves the last two weeks for full mock exams. If you are below B2, add 4-8 weeks of general language work first.

Before You Start: Diagnose

Day one should be measurement, not study: solve one task per skill and note the results. A plan made without knowing your weakest skill gives too much time to your strengths. The TDN levels guide helps with skill-based gap analysis.

The Weekly Programme

WeekFocusWeekly goal
1Learn the formatTask types of all 4 sections; 2 exercises per skill
2–3LV + HV technique3 timed LV sets + 3 HV sets per week; start an error log
3–5SA intensity3 graph essays per week, each with feedback; memorise Redemittel
4–6MA intensity2 recorded speaking tasks daily; automate the 7 task frames
7Full mocks2 full mock exams (4 sections, real timing) + detailed error analysis
8Light reviewError log review, Redemittel/vocab sweep; NOTHING new

Daily Routine (~1.5–2 h)

  • 20 min vocabulary: academic word pool + spaced repetition of previous days.
  • 60–80 min main block: a timed task from the week's focus skill + error analysis. Solving tasks without analysis is the plan's most-violated rule.
  • 20 min passive listening: a German podcast or the news — during meals or commutes.

Skill Guides

We wrote a separate guide for each skill: Lesen, Hören, Schreiben (with model answer) and Sprechen (7 task types).

3 Rules That Keep the Plan on Track

  1. Never proceed without measuring: end each week with a mini test in that week's skill. No progress → change the method, not the hours.
  2. Practise productive skills with feedback: unreviewed SA/MA practice reinforces faulty patterns.
  3. Learn nothing new in the final week: week 8 is consolidation — a new word list or strategy means confusion on exam day.

Conclusion

The power of the 8-week plan is not its intensity but its loop: timed task → analysis → targeted repetition. For a B2-level candidate running this loop 5-6 days a week, 4×TDN 4 is an achievable goal.
