onSET identifies a student’s German level and places them in an appropriate preparatory class. It is not a bachelor’s-entry proficiency exam like TestDaF or KAYS.
onSET, TestDaF and KAYS
| Exam | Purpose |
|---|---|
| onSET | Determine German level and starting class |
| TestDaF | Measure international proficiency and, when requirements are met, permit progression |
| KAYS | Internal proficiency when TestDaF cannot be held |
If you do not attend
The official FAQ states that students who do not take onSET begin German preparation at A1. Students with prior German should therefore check current eligibility and dates.
Before the exam
- Open the current academic calendar.
- Confirm who must attend in that year’s notice.
- Check ID, time and room.
- Remember that the result places you in a level; it is not an exemption document.
