Can You Enter University with TestDaF TDN 3? The TDN 4 Rule
Last updated: 27 August 2026 · Verified against official sources
The standard route to unrestricted language admission is at least TDN 4 in all four sections. A university may nevertheless accept TDN 3 in a particular skill for a specific programme; that is a programme decision.
What TDN 4 proves
Under the relevant framework, at least TDN 4 in all four skills is general proof of unrestricted linguistic readiness. TestDaF reports each skill separately rather than one overall result.
When TDN 3 may work
TestDaF explains that universities and faculties can set a differentiated skill profile. One programme may accept TDN 3 in Writing while another may demand more.
This is not a general exemption. Verify the programme, intake and application route.
Verification order
- Open the current programme page for admission or language requirements.
- Read the required TDN for each skill separately.
- Ask the international office in writing if the rule is unclear.
- For uni-assist applications, check both programme and document rules.
