DTZ complaint letter: Beschwerde B1 models and practice tasks
Last updated: 20 October 2026 · Checked against BAMF, g.a.s.t. and the legal texts
A complaint is a letter type you meet in the official DTZ practice sets: something went wrong, and you ask a company or landlord in writing to put it right. This page shows how to build a Beschwerde Leitpunkt by Leitpunkt, gives you two new practice tasks in the exam layout and compares a B1 and an A2 version of the same letter against the four official criteria.
What a complaint letter is in the DTZ
In a Beschwerde you tell a company, landlord or service provider that something has gone wrong and ask them to fix it: a damaged delivery, a wrong bill, a repair that never happens. In the DTZ it is a semi-formal letter or e-mail to someone you do not know personally, so the tone is polite but firm.
The task always gives you four Leitpunkte. For a complaint they usually cover the facts (what, when), the problem, what you have already done and what you want now. The Inhalt criterion checks whether all four are covered precisely; the other three criteria judge how clearly you link them, how correct your German is and how precise your words are.
- Schreiben is the last part of the 100-minute written exam: Hören (about 25 minutes), Lesen (45), then Schreiben (30).
- You choose Aufgabe A or Aufgabe B and tick your choice on the Schreibbogen; only what is on the Schreibbogen (front and back) is scored.
- Each task gives a short situation and four Leitpunkte in note form. All four must be covered, and the text needs an Anrede and a Gruß.
- No word count is set, and dictionaries are not allowed.
- Four criteria with 0–5 points each (Inhalt, Kommunikative Gestaltung, Korrektheit, Wortschatz), 20 in total: 15–20 = B1, 7–14 = A2, 0–6 = below A2.
Structure of a Beschwerde, Leitpunkt by Leitpunkt
| Part of the letter | What to write | German example |
|---|---|---|
| Anrede | Formal greeting. No name given: Damen und Herren; name given: Sehr geehrte Frau … / Sehr geehrter Herr … | Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, |
| Opening: reason for writing | One sentence saying that you want to complain and about what. |
| Leitpunkt: what happened | The facts: what, when, where; an order or customer number if you have one. |
| Leitpunkt: the problem | Describe exactly what is broken, missing or wrong. |
| Leitpunkt: what you have already tried | Calls, e-mails or visits so far, and what came of them. |
| Leitpunkt: your demand | What should happen now (repair, exchange or refund), ideally with a deadline. | Bitte reparieren Sie die Maschine bis zum 31. März oder tauschen Sie sie um. |
| Closing, Gruß, name | A short final sentence, then Mit freundlichen Grüßen and your full name. | Ich hoffe auf eine schnelle Lösung. / Mit freundlichen Grüßen / Vorname Nachname |
In the exam, follow the four Leitpunkte printed on your task, in their order. The table shows the typical pattern of this letter type; your task may name the points differently.
Aufgabe A: damaged wardrobe from an online shop
Work as in the exam: pick one task, set a timer for 30 minutes and write by hand, without a dictionary. The first German line below is the standard instruction on the DTZ task sheet; the two tasks themselves are new.
Wählen Sie Aufgabe A oder Aufgabe B. Zeigen Sie, was Sie können.
- Bestellung: was und wann?
- Schaden am Schrank
- Kontakt zum Kundenservice bis jetzt
- Was soll der Shop jetzt tun?
All tasks, model letters and phrases on this page are original Zertifly practice material in the DTZ format. They are not official exam tasks and deliberately avoid the topics of the official g.a.s.t. practice sets.
Aufgabe B: gym still debiting after cancellation

Samir Haddad
The numbers [1]–[4] only show where each Leitpunkt is covered; do not write them in the exam. Why this is B1: every Leitpunkt has concrete details (date, order number, which door, two calls and an e-mail), the paragraphs follow the task, and connectors such as weil, außerdem, deshalb and wenn hold the text together. The tone stays polite although the writer is clearly annoyed.
The same letter at A2, compared by criteria
Here is the same e-mail as an A2 candidate might write it: correct, all four Leitpunkte present, but short main clauses, few details and few connectors. Compare it with the B1 model line by line.
Vielen Dank.
Mit freundlichen Grüßen
Samir Haddad
| Criterion | B1 model (Aufgabe A) | A2 version |
|---|---|---|
| I Inhalt (content, Leitpunkte) | 5: all four Leitpunkte covered precisely: date and order number, exact damage, two calls and an e-mail, a clear demand with a deadline and an alternative. | 4: all four points are there, but thin: no date, the damage is barely described and the demand has no deadline, so the reader has to fill gaps. |
| II Kommunikative Gestaltung (register, structure, linking) | 4–5: right register (Sie, Anrede, Gruß), clear order, sentences linked with weil, deshalb, außerdem, wenn. | 2–3: the register is right, but short main clauses are joined only with und, aber, oder. |
| III Korrektheit (grammar, spelling) | 4–5: practically error-free, including subordinate clauses and the Perfekt. | 3: correct, but only simple structures and hardly any subordinate clauses. |
| IV Wortschatz (vocabulary) | 4–5: precise everyday words for the situation. | 2: basic words; many things stay general. |
| Total (orientation) | about 17–20 → B1 (15–20) | about 11–12 → A2 (7–14) |
This is an orientation, not an official rating. In the exam, trained raters judge the text against the four criteria (5 = B1 gut erfüllt, 4 = B1 erfüllt, 3 = A2 gut erfüllt, 2 = A2 erfüllt, 1 = A1 erfüllt) and do not count points mechanically. For comparison: a text that covers only one Leitpunkt gets 1–2 for Inhalt, and an empty Schreibbogen scores 0.

Olena Petrenko
This one is a letter, not an e-mail, but the structure is the same. Note how [2] gives amounts and dates instead of just saying that money was taken, and how [4] asks for written confirmation, which is exactly what the Leitpunkt requires.

Self-check and typical mistakes
Use the last minutes of the 30 to go through this list. The table below shows mistakes that often cost points in complaint letters, each with a better version.
- Did you give facts (what, when, order or contract number) before you complain?
- Is your demand concrete (repair, exchange or refund), and does it have a deadline?
- Is the tone firm but polite: no insults, no du, not an exclamation mark in every line?
- Anrede at the top, Gruß and your full name at the end?
- All four Leitpunkte covered, in the order of the task, in full sentences rather than keywords?
- Sie-form used consistently (Sie, Ihnen, Ihr)?
- Task A or B ticked on the Schreibbogen, and the whole text written on the Schreibbogen with a blue or black ballpoint pen?
| Typical mistake | Not like this | Better |
|---|---|---|
| Only emotions, no facts: the reader does not know what you ordered or when. |
| Rude or informal tone (Hallo, ihr, insults) in a letter to a company. |
| A vague demand: the company does not know what you want. | Bitte machen Sie etwas. | Bitte schicken Sie mir bis zum 20. September eine neue Tür. |
| Leitpunkte copied as keywords instead of full sentences. | Hotline: Montag, Dienstag, keine Antwort. |
| Verb in the wrong place after weil or dass: it goes to the end. |
| Informal or missing Gruß at the end. | Tschüss und bis bald! | Mit freundlichen Grüßen / Samir Haddad |
Why a complete complaint letter matters more from 1 November 2026
Planned from 1 November 2026: according to a dpa report on a draft by the Federal Ministry of the Interior, the weakest of the three parts would have to reach at least A2. For an overall B1 you would then need at least 7 of 20 points in Schreiben, even with B1 in Sprechen and in Hören/Lesen. Under the current rule, Sprechen B1 plus Hören/Lesen B1 is enough even with a very weak Schreiben. As of 20 October 2026 the official text has not been published and transition rules are unknown, so check with your Prüfstelle or course provider.
Complaint letters rarely fail because of grammar; they fail when the task is misunderstood or Leitpunkte are missing. If you only write an angry paragraph about the broken door and nothing about your calls or your demand, Inhalt drops sharply, and a short text like that risks ending up in the 0–6 range. The A2 version above, with all four points in simple sentences, is at about 11–12 points (orientation), well above that line. For candidates who really write the whole letter, little changes.
