In an Anfrage you ask an institution for information: opening hours, prices, conditions, a visit. It sounds easy, but polite indirect questions and the Leitpunkt about yourself are where many candidates lose points. This page gives you the structure, two new tasks in the exam layout and a B1 and an A2 version of the same e-mail with an orientation rating.

What an Anfrage is in the DTZ

An Anfrage is a semi-formal letter or e-mail asking for information: you have seen an offer (a course, a Kita, a club, a flat) and want the details before you decide. The reader is an office or an institution, so you write with Sie and polite question forms.

The four Leitpunkte rarely consist of questions only. Usually one of them is about you (your child's age, your level, your working hours), because the reader needs it to answer. Leaving that point out costs Inhalt, even if all your questions are perfect.

  • Schreiben is the last part of the 100-minute written exam: Hören (about 25 minutes), Lesen (45), then Schreiben (30).
  • You choose Aufgabe A or Aufgabe B and tick your choice on the Schreibbogen; only what is on the Schreibbogen (front and back) is scored.
  • Each task gives a short situation and four Leitpunkte in note form. All four must be covered, and the text needs an Anrede and a Gruß.
  • No word count is set, and dictionaries are not allowed.
  • Four criteria with 0–5 points each (Inhalt, Kommunikative Gestaltung, Korrektheit, Wortschatz), 20 in total: 15–20 = B1, 7–14 = A2, 0–6 = below A2.

Structure of an Anfrage: from reference to questions

Part of the letterWhat to writeGerman example
AnredeTo an institution: Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren; name known: Sehr geehrte Frau … / Sehr geehrter Herr …Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,
Opening: reference and reasonWhere you saw the offer and what you are interested in.in der Zeitung habe ich gelesen, dass Sie Computerkurse für Anfänger anbieten.
Leitpunkt: you and your situationShort information the reader needs in order to answer you.
Leitpunkt: question 2 (costs)Ask about the price and any extra costs.
Leitpunkt: question 3 (conditions, what to bring)Ask what you need to bring, prepare or send.Muss ich einen eigenen Laptop mitbringen?
Closing, Gruß, nameSay you look forward to the answer, then the Gruß and your full name.Ich freue mich auf Ihre Antwort. / Mit freundlichen Grüßen / Vorname Nachname

In the exam, follow the four Leitpunkte printed on your task, in their order. The table shows the typical pattern of this letter type; your task may name the points differently.

Aufgabe A: asking a Kita about a place

Work as in the exam: pick one task, set a timer for 30 minutes and write by hand, without a dictionary. The first German line below is the standard instruction on the DTZ task sheet; the two tasks themselves are new.

Wählen Sie Aufgabe A oder Aufgabe B. Zeigen Sie, was Sie können.

  • Betreuungszeiten
  • Kosten
  • Besuch in der Kita

All tasks, model letters and phrases on this page are original Zertifly practice material in the DTZ format. They are not official exam tasks and deliberately avoid the topics of the official g.a.s.t. practice sets.

Aufgabe B: asking about an adult swimming course

  • Preis
  • Was muss man mitbringen?

B1 model answer for Aufgabe A

Mariam Karimi

The numbers [1]–[4] only show where each Leitpunkt is covered; do not write them in the exam. Why this is B1: each Leitpunkt gets its own paragraph, the writer gives the information the Kita needs (exact age, languages, working hours) and asks polite indirect questions (Könnten Sie mir bitte sagen, welche … / ob …). Konjunktiv forms such as bräuchten, würden and wäre make the request sound polite.

The same e-mail at A2, compared by criteria

The same e-mail as an A2 candidate might write it: all four points are there, but each is reduced to one simple sentence or a direct question.

[3] Was kostet ein Platz?

[4] Kann ich die Kita einmal besuchen?

Vielen Dank.

Mit freundlichen Grüßen

Mariam Karimi

CriterionB1 model (Aufgabe A)A2 version
I Inhalt (content, Leitpunkte)5: all four Leitpunkte precise: exact age and languages, the hours needed plus a question about times and lunch, costs including meals, a concrete request for a visit.4: all four points are there, but each in a single sentence: no question about lunch, no time for the visit, so the Kita would have to ask back.
II Kommunikative Gestaltung (register, structure, linking)4–5: right register (Sie, Anrede, Gruß), clear order, sentences linked with weil, deshalb, außerdem, wenn.2–3: the register is right, but short main clauses are joined only with und, aber, oder.
III Korrektheit (grammar, spelling)4–5: practically error-free, including subordinate clauses and the Perfekt.3: correct, but only simple structures and hardly any subordinate clauses.
IV Wortschatz (vocabulary)4–5: precise everyday words for the situation.2: basic words; many things stay general.
Total (orientation)about 17–20 → B1 (15–20)about 11–12 → A2 (7–14)

This is an orientation, not an official rating. In the exam, trained raters judge the text against the four criteria (5 = B1 gut erfüllt, 4 = B1 erfüllt, 3 = A2 gut erfüllt, 2 = A2 erfüllt, 1 = A1 erfüllt) and do not count points mechanically. For comparison: a text that covers only one Leitpunkt gets 1–2 for Inhalt, and an empty Schreibbogen scores 0.

Kofi Mensah

Look at the first Leitpunkt: the writer does not just say „Ich kann nicht schwimmen“ but explains the level (safe in shallow water, afraid in deep water) and asks a matching question. That is what precise coverage of a Leitpunkt looks like.

Self-check and typical mistakes

Go through this list in the last minutes. The table shows mistakes that often cost points in inquiry letters, each with a better version.

  • Did you say where you saw the offer and why you are writing?
  • Did you give the information about yourself that one Leitpunkt asks for?
  • Are your questions polite (Könnten Sie …, Ich möchte gern wissen, …), with the verb at the end in indirect questions?
  • Anrede at the top, Gruß and your full name at the end?
  • All four Leitpunkte covered, in the order of the task, in full sentences rather than keywords?
  • Sie-form used consistently (Sie, Ihnen, Ihr)?
  • Task A or B ticked on the Schreibbogen, and the whole text written on the Schreibbogen with a blue or black ballpoint pen?

Why a complete Anfrage matters more from 1 November 2026

Planned from 1 November 2026: according to a dpa report on a draft by the Federal Ministry of the Interior, the weakest of the three parts would have to reach at least A2. For an overall B1 you would then need at least 7 of 20 points in Schreiben, even with B1 in Sprechen and in Hören/Lesen. Under the current rule, Sprechen B1 plus Hören/Lesen B1 is enough even with a very weak Schreiben. As of 20 October 2026 the official text has not been published and transition rules are unknown, so check with your Prüfstelle or course provider.

An Anfrage that is just three short questions with no Anrede, no information about yourself and no Gruß risks a very low score. If the planned rule comes into force, Schreiben with 0–6 points would block an overall B1 even with a strong Sprechen. A complete e-mail like the A2 version above already reaches about 11–12 points (orientation); for candidates who really write the text, little changes.
