DTZ Writing Examples: Schreiben Model Letters with Scores (B1/A2)

Level:A2–B1Duration:100 min + ~16 minFee:Covered by BAMF in the courseValidity:UnlimitedFormat:Written + Oral (pairs)

Last updated: 20 October 2026 · Checked against BAMF, g.a.s.t. and the legal texts

This page gives you two new writing tasks in the DTZ format and, for Aufgabe A, three answers at different levels – B1, A2 and below A2 – each with an orientation rating against the four official criteria. Aufgabe B comes with a B1 model letter. A 30-minute plan, the most common mistakes and a final checklist help you avoid losing points in Schreiben, which matters more if the planned rule from 1 November 2026 takes effect.

DTZ Schreiben at a glance

ItemWhat applies
Time30 minutes; the last part of the written exam (Hören about 25 + Lesen 45 + Schreiben 30 = 100 minutes, no break).
TaskYou choose Aufgabe A or Aufgabe B and tick your choice on the Schreibbogen (writing sheet).
Text typeA semi-formal or formal message (letter or e-mail): a short situation plus four Leitpunkte in note form; all four must be covered.
Must includeAnrede (greeting) and Gruß (sign-off) – the instruction reminds you explicitly.
LengthNo word count is prescribed; the instruction says: „Schreiben Sie möglichst viel.“
MaterialsSchreibbogen (front and back, no extra sheets), handed out when Schreiben starts; only a non-erasable blue or black ballpoint pen; no dictionary. Only what is on the Schreibbogen is scored.
ScoringFour criteria, 0–5 points each (5 = B1 gut erfüllt, 4 = B1 erfüllt, 3 = A2 gut erfüllt, 2 = A2 erfüllt, 1 = A1 erfüllt), 20 maximum: B1 = 15–20, A2 = 7–14, below A2 = 0–6.

Why Schreiben counts more from 1 November 2026 (planned)

Under the current rule (§ 10 IntTestV) you get the overall result B1 if you reach B1 in Sprechen and also B1 in either Hören/Lesen or Schreiben. The third part may be weaker – at the moment even below A2. So a candidate with B1 in Sprechen and Hören/Lesen could get B1 with a blank Schreibbogen.

According to a dpa report on a draft by the Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI), an amended Integrationskurstestverordnung is to apply from 1 November 2026: candidates would have to show competence in all three areas, and the weakest one must be at least A2. For an overall B1 you would then need at least 7 points in Schreiben and at least 20 in Hören/Lesen.

The reason the ministry gives is more cheating: tasks and solutions were often bought illegally online and the answers entered in Hören/Lesen, while Schreiben was left (almost) blank.

What does this mean for you? If you genuinely prepare every part, little changes. The real risk is a Schreiben with 0–6 points: a blank sheet, a misunderstood task or only one Leitpunkt covered – exactly like the below-A2 answer further down.

As of 20 October 2026 the official text has not been published. It has not been reported whether the rule for an overall A2 changes or which transition rules apply. Check with your Prüfstelle (test centre) or course provider before your exam date.

The two practice tasks: Aufgabe A and Aufgabe B

Both tasks are original Zertifly practice material in the DTZ format – not official exam tasks. Set a timer for 30 minutes, choose one task and write by hand before you read the model answers.

The official instruction for this part reads:

Wählen Sie Aufgabe A oder Aufgabe B. Zeigen Sie, was Sie können.

Aufgabe A: B1 model answer

This is what a strong answer could look like. Each paragraph handles one Leitpunkt, in the order of the task.

Sehr geehrte Frau Kraus,

Nadia Haddad

CriterionOrientationWhy
I Inhalt (content)5 – B1 gut erfülltAll four Leitpunkte are covered precisely: reason (new job, working until 4 pm), new pick-up time (4:45 pm), who may pick Emil up (his aunt, Tuesdays and Thursdays), request for a reply (by the end of next week).
II Kommunikative Gestaltung (communicative design)5 – B1 gut erfülltFitting Anrede and sign-off, Sie throughout, one paragraph per Leitpunkt, clear links with weil, deshalb, dass, falls and wenn.
III Korrektheit (accuracy)5 – B1 gut erfülltNo errors that get in the way of understanding; the subordinate clauses are built correctly too.
IV Wortschatz (vocabulary)4 – B1 erfülltSuitable everyday vocabulary (Stelle, Abholzeit, Ausweis, schriftliche Erlaubnis, mitteilen); for the top band it could be a little more varied.
Total≈ 19/20 → B1Clearly in the B1 range (15–20 points).

This is Zertifly's orientation, not an official rating. Real raters apply the official descriptors for each criterion.

Aufgabe A: an A2-level answer

The same task, typical of A2: simple main clauses, all four Leitpunkte are there, but with some errors. The errors have been left in on purpose; the corrections follow below.

Hallo Frau Kraus,

ich habe ein neue Arbeit im Supermarkt. Ab 1.

  • Ab 1. Dezember ich arbeite → Ab dem 1. Dezember arbeite ich: The verb goes in position 2; before a date you say ab dem.
  • kann auch Emil holen → darf Emil auch abholen: abholen is the right verb for picking up a child, and darf answers the Leitpunkt (permission) more precisely.
CriterionOrientationWhy
I Inhalt (content)4 – B1 erfülltAll four Leitpunkte appear, but point 3 stays vague: the reader has to guess when the aunt comes and whether she is really allowed to pick Emil up.
II Kommunikative Gestaltung (communicative design)2 – A2 erfülltAnrede and sign-off are there, but „Hallo“ is a bit casual for the head of the Kita. Short main clauses with no links such as weil or deshalb.
III Korrektheit (accuracy)2 – A2 erfülltSeveral errors (verb position, endings, embedded question), but the text stays understandable.
IV Wortschatz (vocabulary)2 – A2 erfülltBasic vocabulary; holen instead of abholen, okay instead of möglich.
Total≈ 10/20 → A2A2 range (7–14 points). Under the planned rule this Schreiben would not block an overall B1 if Sprechen and Hören/Lesen are B1 – but it does not count as a B1 part itself.

Orientation, not an official rating. A more precise point 3 and two or three links (weil, deshalb) would already bring this text much closer to B1.

Aufgabe A: a below-A2 answer

The same task, below A2: very short, only one Leitpunkt is hinted at.

Hallo,

ich habe neu Arbeit. Ich nicht kann um 14 Uhr.

Nadia

CriterionOrientationWhy
I Inhalt (content)1 – A1 erfülltOnly the reason (new job) is hinted at, and even that needs the reader's help: what is changing, what is expected? Pick-up time, pick-up person and the request are missing.
II Kommunikative Gestaltung (communicative design)1 – A1 erfülltGreeting without a name, no sign-off – only the first name; no visible structure.
IV Wortschatz (vocabulary)1 – A1 erfülltOnly a handful of very simple words.
Total≈ 4/20 → below A2Below A2 (0–6 points). Under the rule planned from 1 November 2026 there would be no overall B1 – even with B1 in Sprechen and Hören/Lesen.

Orientation, not an official rating. A blank Schreibbogen scores 0. Even four simple sentences – one per Leitpunkt – plus Anrede and Gruß would have earned clearly more for Inhalt and Kommunikative Gestaltung.

Aufgabe B: B1 model answer

Model answer for Aufgabe B. Watch the structure: one paragraph per Leitpunkt, Sie throughout, the request at the end.

Sehr geehrter Herr Wolf,

Tomasz Nowak

Orientation: all four Leitpunkte are covered precisely and the tone suits a team leader. Like the model for Aufgabe A, this letter would sit clearly in the B1 range – as orientation, not an official rating.

Your 30-minute plan

MinutesStepWhat you do
0–3ChooseRead both tasks. Take the one where you can say something concrete for all four Leitpunkte. Tick A or B on the Schreibbogen.
3–8PlanNote one or two keywords per Leitpunkt (notes in the task booklet are not scored). Sie or du? Decide on Anrede and Gruß.
8–25WriteOn the Schreibbogen: Anrede, one short paragraph per Leitpunkt in the order of the task, a closing sentence, Gruß, your name.
25–30CheckAll four Leitpunkte? Anrede and Gruß? Verb at the end after weil, dass, ob? Sie, Ihnen, Ihr capitalised? Names spelled as in the task?

The minutes are Zertifly's suggestion, not an official rule. What matters is that your complete text ends up on the Schreibbogen.

The most common DTZ Schreiben mistakes

  • A Leitpunkt is missing: with three points covered well, Inhalt can reach at most 4 of 5; with two, at most 3.
  • Missing the topic: if you misread the situation and write about something else, Inhalt can be 0.
  • Wrong register: du to the head of the Kita or your boss, or switching between Sie and du in the same letter.
  • No Anrede or no Gruß – even though the instruction reminds you.
  • Writing the text in the task booklet instead of on the Schreibbogen: only the Schreibbogen is scored.
  • Not ticking Aufgabe A or B.
  • Pencil or erasable pen: only a non-erasable blue or black ballpoint is allowed.

Final checklist

  • Aufgabe A or B is ticked on the Schreibbogen.
  • Anrede with the name – or „Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,“ if no name is given.
  • All four Leitpunkte are in the text, each in its own paragraph.
  • Each point has a concrete detail: a day, a time, a name or a reason.
  • Sie throughout (or du throughout) – Sie, Ihnen and Ihr capitalised.
  • A request or closing sentence at the end, then the Gruß and your name.
  • Everything is on the Schreibbogen, in blue or black ballpoint.
