Goethe A1 Dative and Essential Prepositions

At A1, the dative appears especially after selected prepositions and in a few basic patterns with helfen, danken and gehören. Goethe’s official inventory lists nominative, accusative and dative forms together with selected time, place and means prepositions. This guide focuses on the most useful productive patterns.
Dative articles and contractions

Common mistakes
- Saying mit den Bus instead of mit dem Bus.
- Using zum and zur without checking gender.
- Choosing one case after in without distinguishing Wo? and Wohin?.
- Forgetting the additional plural -n where applicable.
Classify the preposition first. A fixed dative preposition decides the case; with in/an, ask whether the phrase expresses location or destination.
