Modal verbs express ability, necessity, intention, permission and advice. Goethe’s official A1 grammar inventory includes the present-tense forms of können, wollen, müssen, dürfen, sollen and möchten. The finite modal occupies the normal verb position; the main verb stays in the infinitive at the end.

Common mistakes
- Conjugating both verbs: Ich kann spreche.
- Putting the infinitive directly after the modal instead of at the end.
- Missing the politeness difference between möchten and wollen.
- Forgetting stem changes in du and er/sie/es.
A modal can stand alone: Ja, ich kann. If another action is stated, its infinitive goes to the end.
