Goethe A1 Perfect Tense: haben, sein and Partizip II
Updated 29 July 2026 · Checked against the official Goethe A1 inventory
The conversational perfect describes completed past events. Goethe’s official A1 inventory does not require an unlimited past tense for every verb; it names selected perfect forms including arbeiten, fahren, lernen, machen, sehen and verstehen. The auxiliary is finite and Partizip II goes to the end.
Participle and auxiliary
| Form | Use |
|---|---|
| machen → hat gemacht | regular |
| lernen → hat gelernt | regular |
| sehen → hat gesehen | irregular |
| verstehen → hat verstanden | no ge with ver- |
| einkaufen → hat eingekauft | separable |
| fahren → ist gefahren | movement in the core use |
| bleiben → ist geblieben | uses sein |
A1 past-time sentences
| German | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Ich habe gestern gearbeitet. | I worked yesterday. |
| Wir haben Deutsch gelernt. | We studied German. |
| Sie hat das Formular ausgefüllt. | She completed the form. |
| Er ist nach Berlin gefahren. | He travelled to Berlin. |
| Was hast du am Wochenende gemacht? | What did you do at the weekend? |
Common mistakes
- Leaving the auxiliary unconjugated: Ich haben gelernt.
- Putting Partizip II in the second position.
- Using sein with every verb or mechanically with every movement verb.
- Adding ge to an inseparable ver- verb: geverstanden.
Learn the auxiliary with the verb: not only fahren–gefahren but fahren–ist gefahren. Some auxiliaries depend on meaning; at A1, build from the core patterns.
