Goethe A1 Separable Verbs: Trennbare Verben

With separable verbs, the finite stem occupies the normal verb position and the stressed prefix moves to the end of the main clause. Goethe lists verbs with separable prefixes in its official A1 inventory; forms such as anrufen, anfangen, einkaufen and aufstehen serve daily-plan, appointment and shopping tasks.

Common mistakes
- Not separating: Ich aufstehe um sieben.
- Leaving the prefix beside the verb: Ich stehe auf um sieben.
- Separating the modal infinitive: Ich muss kaufe ein.
- Learning only the stem and losing the prefix that changes its meaning.
Check separability in a dictionary. Unstressed prefixes such as be-, ver-, er-, ent- and zer- are generally inseparable.
