The structure of the digital TestDaF makes some mistakes permanent: you cannot return to earlier tasks in any section, each Speaking task has a fixed speaking time, and Writing has clear word targets. The mistakes below are based on the TestDaF-Institut’s official structure information.

General mistakes

  • Leaving a task half-done to “come back later”: there is no going back in the digital exam.
  • Rushing tasks you suspect are trial items: you cannot know which ones don’t count.
  • Seeing the platform for the first time on exam day: official tutorials and sample tasks are free.
  • Starting Reading without splitting its roughly 55 minutes across the tasks.

Speaking and Listening mistakes

  • A long opening in the 45-second “Rat geben” task, leaving no time for the advice.
  • Speaking without structure in “Thema präsentieren” (2:30) and finishing early.
  • Replacing the summary with your own opinion in “Text zusammenfassen”.
  • Writing unnecessarily long answers in short-answer listening tasks and running out of time.
