The imperative gives instructions, requests and suggestions. Goethe’s adult A1 inventory explicitly includes du, ihr and Sie forms. The verb occupies the first position; du and ihr are omitted, while formal Sie remains after the verb.
Forming the imperative

Common mistakes
- Keeping the du subject in an ordinary command.
- Omitting Sie in the formal form.
- Keeping a separable prefix attached: Aufsteh!
- Making every command sound abrupt by omitting bitte in a request.
Some du forms change their stem: sprechen → Sprich!; fahren → Fahr! At A1, learn the frequent forms as complete patterns.
