Goethe A1 Preterite: war and hatte
Updated 29 July 2026 · Checked against the official Goethe A1 inventory
Goethe A1 does not require the preterite of every verb. Its official inventory gives selected first- and third-person forms of sein and haben: Ich war nicht da and Ich/Sie hatte keine Zeit. These forms efficiently describe past states, locations, possession and availability.
Core forms and safe scope
| Form | Use |
|---|---|
| ich war | I was |
| er/sie/es war | he/she/it was |
| ich hatte | I had |
| er/sie hatte | he/she had |
| wir/sie/Sie waren | frequent plural/formal sein form |
| wir/sie/Sie hatten | frequent plural/formal haben form |
Everyday A1 examples
| German | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Gestern war ich krank. | I was ill yesterday. |
| Der Kurs war sehr gut. | The course was very good. |
| Ich hatte keine Zeit. | I had no time. |
| Sie hatte einen Termin. | She had an appointment. |
| Wir waren am Wochenende zu Hause. | We were at home at the weekend. |
Common mistakes
- Using war for every past action: Ich war gearbeitet.
- Confusing hatte with perfect-tense auxiliary hat.
- Extending the topic to every irregular preterite and exceeding A1 scope.
- Leaving the verb in the present with a past-time marker: Gestern bin ich krank.
This is not a complete preterite table. The exam-safe core is war/hatte; plural forms support comprehension of common everyday texts.

Official basis
Goethe’s Start Deutsch 1 grammar inventory restricts the preterite to selected first- and third-person forms of haben and sein. This page preserves that boundary.
